Olympic Torch Relay Community Celebrations

Toerch Relay: Route Community / Relais De La Flamme: Communaute du Parcours

6:00pm – 8:00pm, Wednesday December 30th, 2009
Discovery North Bay Museum, 100 Ferguson Street
North Bay, ON

To celebrate the arrival of the flame, the community is planning an array of stage entertainment that includes an aboriginal welcome, The Interlink Choir, Dreamcoat Theatre, Café Chantant of École Secondaire Catholique Algonquin, Renata Dolata, Nishnaabe Eshkiniijig & Spirit Star Singers. The Widdifield High School Choir will be performing the national anthem in both French & English.

There will also be performances, interactive displays and giveaways by sponsors including Coca-Cola & RBC. Crowds will be dazzled by a spectacular grand finale fireworks display.

Admission is free to the public and the first 1000 people will receive a free treat of toffee on snow.

Bring your camera to take your picture with the Olympic Torch, an Inukshuk and a Bobsled.

Dress warmly and help paint the town red by wearing your red clothing.

Olympic Athlete Meet & Greet

2:00pm - 4:00pm, Wednesday December 30th, 2009
Discovery North Bay Museum, 100 Ferguson Street
North Bay, ON

To kick off the arrival of the flame an Olympic Athlete Meet & Greet will be held. Some of the athletes attending will include Kate Pace Lindsay, Barb Olmsted, Allison Herst, The Duhaime Family and Diane O’Grady. North Bay and area residents have the opportunity to meet, talk to and even have their picture taken with some of our very own Olympians. People who attend the “Olympic Athlete Meet & Greet” will have the opportunity to win a Vancouver 2010 Torch Replica by Birks valued at over $300. Also the first 20 people to attend the event will be given a free official Olympic Team Canada water bottle.

In just 14 days from today, the eyes of the world will turn to our city as the Olympic Flame arrives in North Bay as part of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola and RBC and supported by the Government of Canada.

The torch relay will arrive in North Bay at approximately 6:04 pm as part of a convoy of vehicles, which will include torchbearer shuttles, media vehicles, relay support vehicles and police cruisers. Temporary rolling road closures will ensure the safety of the torchbearers and spectators lining the relay route. The crowd will see a new torchbearer carry the flame every 300 metres through the community as it travels on its 45,000-kilometre-long journey across Canada — the longest domestic torch relay in Olympic history.

North Bay’s Final Torchbearer

Nicholas Fung named Vancouver 2010 community torchbearer for North Bay, ON. Midway through the two-hour celebration program, Nicholas will carry the Olympic Torch on its final 300 metres to the stage where he will light the 1.3-metre high celebration cauldron, in a move similar to the dramatic highlight of what will occur during the Opening Ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Sign language interpreters will be available at the event.
Parking is limited so please plan accordingly.
Parking for impaired mobility is available on site.
Wear bright coloured clothing and use sidewalks and crosswalks where provided.

Media Release

NORTH BAY, ONTARIO: Residents of North Bay anxious to catch the Olympic Spirit will have the opportunity to see the Olympic Flame in person on Wednesday, December 30th, 2009 as it passes through on its way towards the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, presented by Coca-Cola and RBC, will reach over 90 per cent of Canadians within a one-hour drive. The torch relay route is available at vancouver2010.com and information on how residents can apply to be torchbearers can be found at icoke.ca and rbc.com/carrythetorch.
