North Bay, ON – Nov. 28, 2023 – To enhance pedestrian safety, the City of North Bay has installed new pedestrian crossovers as part of the Making Over Main Street project.
These new crossovers, which replace 'courtesy crosswalks' on Main Street, require drivers to come to a complete stop, yielding the right of way to pedestrians crossing. Pedestrian crossovers are easily identified by the clear pavement markings and prominent signage.
To date, three pedestrian crossovers have been installed on Main Street, including one on Block 5 between Sherbrooke and Wyld streets, and two on Block 4 between Wyld and Ferguson streets. Two more will be installed next year on Block 2, between Ferguson and Fraser streets as part of the next phase of the reconstruction project.
Additionally, the City is reviewing an existing 'courtesy crosswalk’ on Oak Street between Ferguson and Fraser streets to determine if this would also be a suitable crossover location.
For the safety of everyone on the road, drivers and cyclists are reminded to obey all traffic law and to patiently wait for pedestrians to complete their crossing at these designated crossovers before proceeding.
Detailed information regarding the responsibilities of pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers can be found at www.northbay.ca/pedestriancrossings.
