North Bay, ON – March 30, 2023 - The reconstruction of a section of Main Street is set to begin this spring following North Bay City Council’s approval Tuesday of a contract award to MCA Contracting Ltd.
Of five bids received, MCA Contracting Ltd’s was the lowest, providing the best overall value to the City at approximately $8.85 million.
Though the construction schedule has yet to be finalized, the work, which will take place over two years along Main Street between Cassells Street and Sherbrooke Street and on Ferguson Street between Main Street and Oak Street, is expected to get underway in May.
It will be the first major renovation to Main Street in nearly 40 years, involving replacement of surface infrastructure including new asphalt roadway, brushed concrete and exposed aggregate sidewalks, curb and gutter, retaining walls, stairs, railings, benches, traffic lights, festoon lighting and other ancillary works.
The work will begin at Cassells Street and will proceed block-by-block toward Sherbrooke. Each block is expected to take up to three months to complete. Only once a block has been fully reconstructed will the contractor proceed to the next block.
Prior to construction, members of the public can learn more about how the project will unfold during an open house at City Hall where there will be an opportunity to view the construction drawings, project schedule, and ask City staff and the contractor project-related questions. Notification of the public meeting will be provided once a project schedule has been determined with the awarded Contractor.
