North Bay, ON – July 22, 2022 – The City of North Bay will host a one-day recycling drop-off event on Aug. 28 to assist residents in disposing of used mattresses and box springs.
The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the North Bay Public Works Yard via the Seymour Street Entrance (across from the Holiday Inn Express & Suites). Any size of mattress or box spring can be dropped off. A fee of $17 per piece will apply (cash, credit and debit accepted). This offer is only available to residential users.
The City’s Merrick Landfill site ships out truckloads of mattresses and box springs for processing each year as part of North Bay’s Mattress Recycling Program. The fee of $17 per piece is collected to offset the cost of the program, including shipping and processing.
The program has diverted approximately 20,000 mattresses from the City’s landfill site since its inception. The creation of the mattress recycling program was prompted by a Council presentation in 2016 by a FIRST Lego robotics team which found that an estimated 100 mattresses, which are 100 per cent recyclable, were going to the landfill each month.
