Street sweeping gets underway in early spring to clean all City streets of sand and other debris deposited during the winter months. Spring street sweeping helps protect the environment by preventing pollutants from entering the storm sewer system and improves the cleanliness and aesthetics of City streets and parking lots.
Sweeping runs through to late October, although the bulk of the clean-up is typically completed in early spring. A contractor is used during the spring clean-up period. The winter sand from the streets is taken to the Merrick Landfill where it is reused as cover. The annual spring clean-up also involves removal of winter sand from storm structures and culverts.
